Introducing the Austin Memory Project

The Austin Memory Project has since 2002 sought to systematically map the cultural resources and ethnic household history of Austin from the 1880s to the present.

Currently the project has mapped cultural resources in major central city neighborhoods from 1910 to 2000, and the project has mapped ethnic households from 1875 to 1976.

The Austin Memory Project has been based at the Department of Radio, TV and Film at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Austin Memory Project team includes:

Jeremiah Spence, Principal Investigator

Joseph Straubhaar, Co-Principal Investigator/Faculty Supervisor

Data collection for cultural resources data in the Austin Memory Project was performed by undergraduate students in the Department of Radio, TV & Film.

The ethnic household data was digitized from historic map collections and studies on the history of race in Austin.

Full bibliographic references for all sources will be posted on the sources page.

The Austin Memory Project runs on the Codex Mapping Platform web-based interactive geographic information system (GIS) developed and owned by the Virtual Worlds Research Consortium, Texas non-profit corporation.
